Naples: history and culture
Founded in the 8th century BC by the Greeks with the name of Neapolis ("New City"), Naples boasts a two thousands-year history. It was an important cultural centre in Roman times and became the capital of the Kingdom of Naples under various dynasties (Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese). During the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in the 19th century, it was one of the richest and most advanced cities in Europe.
Today, its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a symbol of its extraordinary historical and cultural stratification. Naples welcomes you with its warmth, its flavours and its unique history.
